What is Dairy Intolerance?

Dairy intolerance, also known as lactose intolerance or dairy sensitivity, occurs when the body has difficulty digesting lactose—the natural sugar found in milk and dairy products. This happens due to a deficiency of lactase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down lactose in the small intestine.

Without enough lactase, undigested lactose ferments in the gut, leading to uncomfortable symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. Unlike a dairy allergy, which triggers an immune response, dairy intolerance primarily affects digestion and varies in severity from person to person. Many people with dairy intolerance find relief by avoiding milk-based products or opting for lactose-free and dairy-free alternatives.

Why to Avoid Dairy When Possible?

Avoiding dairy when you have an intolerance is important because consuming it can lead to uncomfortable and disruptive digestive symptoms like bloating, gas, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. When the body lacks enough lactase to break down lactose, the undigested sugar ferments in the gut, causing discomfort and inflammation.

Over time, repeated exposure to dairy can also lead to more severe issues, such as chronic digestive distress, nutrient malabsorption, and imbalances in gut health. By eliminating dairy or choosing lactose-free alternatives, individuals with dairy intolerance can improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and enhance overall well-being.

With a little prep, smart swaps, and some creativity, healthy gluten-free and dairy-free lunches can be quick, tasty, and totally school-approved.
If you’re making dairy-free meals for your children, you’re definitely not alone. In fact, about 2.5 % of children under three years old are allergic to milk proteins, making dairy one of the most common food allergens in early childhood. (FoodAllergy.org)
