What is Gluten Intolerance

What is Gluten Intolerance?

Gluten intolerance, sometimes called non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), is a condition where your body reacts negatively to gluten—a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Unlike Celiac Disease, gluten intolerance does not cause an autoimmune response or damage the small intestine. However, the symptoms can still be life-disrupting and may include bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, brain fog, headaches, and even joint pain.

It’s important to understand that gluten intolerance is not “just in your head.” The discomfort is real, and avoiding gluten is essential to feeling your best. While it doesn’t come with the same long-term risks as Celiac Disease, unmanaged gluten intolerance can still impact your quality of life and overall well-being.

Why Avoid Gluten?

For those with gluten intolerance, removing gluten from their diet is the best way to manage their symptoms and protect their health. While it is challenging at first, living gluten-free doesn’t mean missing out on delicious meals or their favorite activities—it’s all about finding the right resources and strategies to support their journey.

Eating out with Celiac Disease can feel overwhelming, but preparation and clear communication can help. Learn what to ask, what warning signs to notice, and how to protect your health without feeling like a problem.
When I was first diagnosed, I didn’t feel strong or brave. I felt frustrated. I pouted — truly pouted — over the loss of my favorite foods. Back then, there weren’t shelves of gluten-free options waiting for me. There were no trendy menus or clearly labeled bakery cases. Learning celiac safety basics felt less like empowerment and more like loss. If you’re standing in that same space right now — frustrated, tired, maybe even grieving — I understand that feeling

As a mom navigating both gluten-free and dairy-free living, I know firsthand how tricky it can be to pack a school lunch your kids will actually eat. Some mornings feel like a game of “what won’t upset their tummy today?” — but it doesn’t have to be that way! With a little prep, smart swaps, and some creativity, healthy gluten-free and dairy-free lunches can be quick, tasty, and totally school-approved.
Finding safe, delicious snacks for kids with gluten sensitivities or Celiac Disease doesn’t have to be stressful. With a little creativity and the right go-to brands, you can pack lunch boxes, after-school bites, and family road-trip bags full of snacks your little ones actually want to eat. From crunchy crackers to chewy fruit snacks and mini muffins, gluten-free eating can be every bit as fun (and flavorful!) as the classic snacks they already love.
If you’re anything like us, you love a good night out — the kind where you don’t have to do the dishes and can just relax with great food and even better company.
